I'm not really upset with Kirk. I think (except for the high throw to DJax that resulted in an INT - which shows us how much we really need a few tall, big, fast WRs on this team) he's been pretty much on-point. He has looked decisive and calm under pressure. I think that holding call on Reed that got Kirk down to the 5 yd line was BS. Big time BS.
This game shows a clear discrepancy in talent between the two ball clubs. I can't get upset over not having the talent. We all know that is going to take Scot some time.
What distresses me in this game, however are:
1. Horiffic tackling / angles being taken to the ballcarrier by LBs. I KNOW the tackling issue is on the coaches. Period. There is no arguing this. It is what coaches are paid to do: get their guys swarming to the ball and tackling sound. If they get beat because they aren't good enough, then so be it. But you have to get the ballcarrier down. Tackling on this team is as bad as I've ever seen it. That is on Barry and his staff. As is the lack of swarming to the ball. Guys just assume their teammate closest to the ballcarrier is going to make the play instead of making sure the tackle is made. Unacceptable.
2. The lack of the offense to take control of anything. That last drive was looking good, no question, but up until that point, they couldn't stay on the field. They had one big throw to DJax and two very good throws from Kirk. That's it.
3. I'm sensing a tangible lack of fight in this defense this game. Seems that they came out with good energy, but once the Panthers put two good drives on them, they just are not showing energy. They seriously need to get their heads back in the game and show some fight.
4. The continued issue of this team not showing up on the road. One road win in 1.5 seasons does not inspire much confidence. At some point, they have to turn the corner.
I'm not feeling like Gruden is getting out coached this game. I think his defense and defensive coaching staff is letting him down, and I think our issues on the O line (even though they are pass protecting well) when it comes to dominating the line of scrimmage are showing up. We desperately need a true Center and maybe a LG.
Hope to see this team rise up and show some fight in the second half.
If we have the answer when it comes to coaching, which I see hardly any signs of, if I'm being honest, then we are 3 years away. Maybe 2.
If we don't have the answer with the coaches, we're more like 5+ years away. I believe that.
We are playing better at home, but that doesn't demand the same level of coaching as playing well on the road. Goose's comments about us coming out flat REALLY upset me, and only cement my opinion that we just do not have the answer at coaching. Yes, we have work to do talent-wise, but by now, Gruden should be showing so much more. I think his ceiling is Norv Turner. Not good enough.
Gruden said he is going to find out a lot about his team in this half.
Well, same can be said for finding out a lot about Gruden in this half. He truly needs to step up as a coach and show a real ability to get his guys to play on the road and rally them after a bad half.
He can still do that in this half, even if we end up losing. Just show us some damn coaching, Gruden.
