I've tried to realize the greatness that has been thrown on Pet Sounds by the best and most knowledgeable critics, but I just don't get it. I think Today is just as creative and contains better material. There's some doo-wop to any beach boys record. Pet Sounds is my least favorite other than the standards that it contained.
Yeah, it's not my favorite Beach Boys album (that would be Smiley Smile), but it was a key part of the mid '60s transition from dance pop songs to coherent albums you listened to for their own musical sake, and really a nice piece of proto-psychedelia.
