I really liked what I saw of Sheldon Rankins in the Senior Bowl practices and his combine. But is he a good fit for us? Can he play 3-4 DE or NT? He seems more of a 4-3 DT. I know we play a lot of 4-3 line ups, but would he have to come off the field in the 3-4 looks?

We need to go defense in the first two rounds AFAIC. (or even the first three) Maybe even two DTs (or an NT) right off the bat. One of these would be a nice combo for the first two rounds. DT - A'Shawn Robinson ILB - Kentrell Brothers
This is a reallllly deep draft for interior D-line, which is great because we have a serious need there. I think all the players listed so far-- Rankins, Clark, Bullard, Robinson and his teammate Reed-- would all be immediate upgrades to our D-line. I think Rankins could work in 3-4 looks. I wouldn't ask him to 2 gap but I think he'd be fine otherwise.
Another guy to keep your eyes on is Vernon Butler out of LA Tech. He's been getting some mediot buzz lately so I just watched some film of his and liked what I saw. He's a pretty good athlete for his size, and he has extremely long arms (35 inches) that he knows how to use. He's heavy handed and he usually blows offensive linemen back a yard or 2 just from his initial punch and extension. After the initial punch he can use his length to separate from the block or create leverage to drive the O-lineman back. On film he regularly wrecked single blocks in both the run game and passing game. The main flaw that I saw was a tendency to get high against double teams, which allowed him to be driven off the ball.
The biggest question mark for me in this draft is Nkemdiche. If he's there at 21, should the Redskins take him? As a player, I think he's exactly what the Redskins need. He's a perfect fit at 5-tech as an heir to Hatcher. He'd add an element of sheer elite athleticism that is sorely lacking from the Redskins D. But, he's a knucklehead and has character concerns. From the reports I've read, the concerns are more Ricky Williams-esque than say a partier like Johnny Football or gang related stuff like Aaron Hernandez. But I think the concerns are real and they add an element of risk. The Redskins have a pretty strong veteran core on the d-line (of course most of them might not be back next year), but I am not sure if the risk with Nkemdiche is a prudent one.
I'm not real big on Nkemdiche. I definitely see the potential, but his off-field activities and his consistency are major red flags for me. If we had a strong D already and were looking for one piece to push us over the edge for a SB run, then I might be more willing to take a gamble on him. But we need to rebuild 70% of the defense including the entire DL except for Baker. Too big of a risk with were this defense is IMO. And for that same reason I wouldn't take Spence early either. And depending on further info on Jaylon Smith's knee...I'd put him in the same category (but for completely different reason).
Scotty J-- NO YOU DON't TAKE that problem child at 21 when you can take a sure thing in Kelly instead. Just like we took Scherff at 5. Seemed too high for him but nobody's complaining now (like I was last year in April) when they see we have a sure thing, reliable, tough soldier on our team for a decade.

Nkemdiche is also a no for me. Past the off field bull he pulls, the kid admitted to taking too many plays off. And this is when he is looking to get his first real payday of his life. If that doesn't motivate you, what makes you think coaches or teammates are going to. I see a guy who relies too much on physical gifts than on hardwork and love for the game.
For the skins and all our holes/depth issues, we can't afford not to hit on 21, if that's where we stay. I'd have no problem if that's kelly, Ragland or whomever scottymac sees fit.
