Every year we get to a game that will get us nationwide respect, and every year we lose that game. Until we actually win that game, I'm going to think we are going to lose it, as is the case this year on MNF. Agreed. This game screams letdown game after winning a big game against Green Bay and a week off listening to the press talk about us being in first place and all of that garbage. We're going to try to run the ball, it's going to get destroyed because they're going to oversell on the run and force us until 3rd and longs. We're going to do poorly at converting them in the first half and we're going to be forced into a shootout against them and we're going to lose because barely anyone can out shoutout the Saints. An embarrassing loss is generally how things go for us on MNF. The Saints' offense is rolling and we are not a team that puts up a ton of points, even against weak defenses. I'm not feeling the victory vibes for this one because I don't think we can keep up with the Saints scoring. Does the bye help? I doubt it. Unless I'm mistaken, Gruden is 1-3 coming off a bye week. We have a lot to play for and the talent to win, but trends and tendencies are not on our side.

So after 3 games we r ranked 7th in rush D allowing 90 YPG. We are 3rd in total D and 3rd in passing yards. We haven't allowed any runs of 20 or more yards thus far. Defensive rankings go off total yrds - not the best measure. The only stat worth anything to rank total defense is points allowed. On that measure Titans are the No 1 ranked defense. Our rushing yrds per play is quite high. Something like 4.7yrds / play which ranks us down at around 20. We haven't played teams committed to the run. The Saints are. That run defense will get well-tested. If I was Peyton, I would fancy his chances of being able to have a very productive running game. If they establish dominance in the run game it's game over.

Wonder if anything is up with Doctson? John Keim (or someone) asked why he was not out at practice, and Jay was kind of elusive on the answer....saying that the injury report would come out tomorrow. Doctson got his toe stepped on in practice. Went to go see the doctor. Was in good spirits afterwards. We'll know more tomorrow. As per Keim. He was in good spirits because he had another excuse.

We are ranked third defensively in yds/game against the pass (averaging 187.3/game), we are ranked seventh in yds/game against the rush (averaging 90.7/game), and total yds/game defensively we are ranked third (averaging 278.0/game). In points allowed, we are ranked second (averaging 14.7/game).
Our main struggle on defense is getting teams off the field ranking twentieth percentage wise (42% [16 of 38] 3rd down stoppage percentage).
An interesting stat though is our average time of possession allowed to the opposing team. We're ranked first in the league (averaging just 26:29/game).
Offensively, we're ranked fourteenth in overall offense yds/game (average 383.0/game), we're ranked twenty-third in scoring offense (averaging 21.3/game), we're ranked fifteenth in 3rd down conversion percentage (averaging 41%/game [16 of 39]), we're ranked third in offensive time of possession (averaging 33:31/game), we're ranked eighteenth in yds/game passing (averaging 245.3/game) and finally, our best ranking offensively, we are ranked fifth in yds/game rushing (averaging 137.7/game).
The reason for all of those rankings tells you one thing, we need to run the ball successfully (we're middle of the pack in yds/attempt on the ground but slightly better in the air [4.2/attempt on the ground and 8.0/attempt passing]) to be able to move the chains. If I were the Saints, I'd stack the box and force us to throw past 10 yards.

So far, we've faced three veteran QBs - two former number one overalls, and Aaron Rodgers - but all three are currently shadows of their best selves as NFL signal callers in prior years. We'll not have that 'advantage' Monday night - even given Drew Brees' advanced age. Like Brady, he's still 'slingin it!' This game is going to say an awful lot about who and where we are as we close out our first quarter of the season. It's almost time to strap it up and let it roll. Rock on, Redskins! We are ranked third defensively in yds/game against the pass (averaging 187.3/game), we are ranked seventh in yds/game against the rush (averaging 90.7/game), and total yds/game defensively we are ranked third (averaging 278.0/game). Unfortunately, that "glass is half full" mentality is not in vogue with this fan base as of late. Why would it be? This franchise hasn't earned any trust from it's fan base. You want fans to start believing? Win the next three games, starting with Monday night...where the Redskins usually never show up and traditionally get their hats handed to them....then we can talk about the contents of the glass. That quote is not universal among this fan base. It only applies to your sentiment Cooley, and perhaps others that share that fatalistic outlook. Its not grounded in facts. Its ground in your personal disappointment. We all rationalize what we feel from a team we support, pro or con. We all think we "know" why circumstances surrounding our team happen. But that's all total Bull. Most of the fans have no idea what they are watching on the football field, just that's its team is successful or unsuccessful in any given game after the fact. The emotional reaction, good or bad, usually takes over any iota of objectivity. As a result the outcome of a game stands on its own merits, rather than how the game was actually played. The issue of fan discontent comes in when we are never satisfied when we see a successful effort on the football field and begin qualifying our persistent discontent. That's the glass half empty. When you get to that point, being a fan of a team is not much fun and really its a long climb back to enjoying the game again. So I get where you are coming from. But not everybody struggles with the notion that a team must perform to the expectations of a fan. Some fans enjoy the sport and the match ups for what they are: just a game of skill. They are not so invested in the outcome of a contest that it takes away from the enjoyment of watching the Players compete in the game itself. So "winning the next three games" may be your measure of earning your trust, but its not mine. I hear how "we will get our butts handed to us by The Packers" or whoever it is on our schedule every week, and in the end none of the angst is worth the effort used to thump the pulpit. So you enjoy your fandom as you wish, but don't think you are in the majority.

And consider this, a more extreme example of what Carnack is talking about.
Those 1983 Skins made us so proud that regular season as the defending champs (showing they still had it - as our Caps are doing right now in their impressive start to their title defense).
But when the '83 defending champion Skins eventually ran out of gas, starting in the 2nd half of that NFC Title game versus the Niners at RFK, and essentially 'no showed' in Tampa?
That - at THAT time - ruined the whole majestic '83 campaign for me.
But when I look back now? I love thinking / reading / talking about - and seeing clips / games from (I have DVDs of them) - that 1983 squad's 'victory lap' season.
Just goes to show that we need to find ways - or at least I do, and I think I have begun to - of watching the contests in a multi-faceted way. Like enjoying not only the wins, but when there is defeat, appreciating the games within the game (individual / positional man on man match ups) that our Skins won or competed well in, etc.
The Caps' championship reminds me of how spoiled I was as a Skins fan in the early decades of my fandom, running from '69 (Lombardi) through the Over-the-Hill Gang years (Allen) and then on to the Gibbs Glory years. I was 8 in '69, and 30 when we won our last Super Bowl. So, unlike Nack and a few others here, I wasn't first schooled in the Skins' sorry runs in the 50s / 60s until the club began chucking the ball all over the ball field (Jurgy to Smith, Mitchell and Taylor) and at least started to lose in interesting fashion.
The past quarter century, I've been 'schooled' in learning to process the losing (just like Skins' fans who were young in the 40s when Baugh was a champion and didn't have much of anything to cheer about again until Jurgy-Smith-Mitchell-Taylor.
Just my two cents. And I'm really liking this team, the Indy disappointment notwithstanding, and hoping for the best Monday night!
HTTR!

The Redskins are a shocking 2-13 on Monday Night Football over the past 15 attempts. wtkr.com/2018/10/02/skins-scoop-monday-not-a-fun-day-for-redskins/That is excruciatingly bad. There probably aren't many, if any, teams worse than us on MNF over that span. Some might say we're due for a win. The Saints certainly are beatable and we've beaten them regularly in the Drew Brees era. The Saints are talented but they aren't scary. I fully expect Gruden to live up to his reputation here and follow the pattern of losses. In big test moments, when the NFL world starts taking a look at the Redskins, where Gruden needs to come up big, he has always fallen flat. In doing so, he often looks scared and overmatched on the sideline. Sean Payton is probably 50 times the coach Gruden is, and having an extra week to prepare will be worthless in Gruden's hands (whereas a Belichick might feast on his opponent given extra time, Jay doesn't know what to do with it). We'll see how we all feel Tuesday morning, but I'm certainly not getting my hopes up here.

And if Gruden and the boys in burgundy and gold 'kill it' and come home with the Big win, are we going to receive a Meddle 'Mea Culpa' the likes of which we've not seen around here in CPND in ages? MNF has brutalized us even in our glory years we lost close ones on MNF. I'm praying for a miracle. It would signal a big change if we beat one of the better teams on MNF.

If we win this Monday Night the absolute ONLY thing it means is that the Redskin Players were better (or luckier) than the Saints Players that game.

Does luck play a part in it? Certainly. But skill, be that on the field, coaching, playcalling, etc, plays a far greater factor that luck. Is it nice to have a ball bounce your way? Certainly. But hustle, sound fundamentals, and good coaching make more of a difference than simply getting lucky with the bouncing of a ball.

Of course that's true, that luck is a minor factor in team or player performance. That point is self-evident.
But do not represent for a minute that the requisite qualities to compete in the NFL are somehow lacking on this team anymore or less than any other team in the NFL just by saying those qualities are needed to succeed. That's just empty rhetoric.
"Success: is evidenced by winning the battles in the field of play, not in the court of public opinion. That's why they play the game.

I don't think anybody is saying the team is competitively lacking; but for a variety of reasons, the team has sucked balls on MNF for many years. There is zero reason to think that will change this Monday. Even if it wasn't MNF, most objective analysts would tell you this is a probable Saints victory -- Redskins playing on the road against a high powered offense, while the Redskins offense has been inconsistent. A lot more question marks about the Skins than the Saints. So even removing the Monday Night Football bad mojo factor, this is still a likely loss. When you include the bad mojo factor, it's even more likely that we lose.

Well you can conjure up any combinations of reasons for doom that you wish, meddle and you guys do so each and every week so the impending doom of MNF angle is all fine and dandy. But uniformly none of these musings ever mean a thing in the end, just like the shellacking this team was suppose to take against Green Bay. Its all just nay-saying white noise anymore.
The Players line up to compete and play the game every week and the best team in that moment usually wins, because its just how the NFL works. Some week less talented teams are better in the moment. Other weeks more talented teams are better in the moment. Its why we play the game. None of that has a thing to do with mojo, except in the minds of the fans who think they know the outcomes to games before the fact. If that reality was even remotely true, then Vegas would be easy pickings for our disgruntled fans.

This team has built the hope up in its fan base many times before just to let it down badly.
I think people have every reason to be skeptical until some form of consistency in performance is achieved...just not paranoid about it.

No problem with skepticism....its when the chicken bones start rolling, prognosticating the outcome of games to qualify a fans discontent that it becomes too far fetched.

I think people have every reason to be skeptical until some form of consistency in performance is achieved...just not paranoid about it. I agree with this. While I never claim to represent all fans....I do speak with a lot of them...and as one would expect there is a lot of pessimism around the fans that I encounter with their thoughts on the team. From FO to HC to individual player positions. But at the end of the day winning cures all ills. We have a good season, make the playoffs, may be even win a game...actually back up some of the pre-season verbiage and expectation setting that was promulgated by the FO and HC....then that will not only put more Redskin fan butts in seats at FEDEX for home games, but also quiet many of those who are far more negative about the team than is probably reasonable. Specifically here on the board. IMHO.

Our history in MNF games aside....I agree with your overall take, maybe not the 14 point spread....but the overall idea that we can beat this team. Hell, we had them last season in their house. Held on for over a quarter without CT. And even with Brees leading his comeback, thanks in part to some O and D struggles of our own coming down the stretch with around 5 minutes to go in the game...we still had a chance to kick a FG (think to tie as I recall) but a horse pookey intentional grounding on KC snuffed that out. And we were at far less than full health for that game going into it. So no....the Aints are not the Lambs. They are a good team with holes, just like ours. And Jay knows how to exploit them, based on last season. I think we will be just fine on MNF.

I'm looking forward to seeing what are receivers do against there secondary. I agree, if we can run the ball and keep Brees on the sideline we will be in good shape, but their weakness is their secondary. We will need ppl to step up and make some key catches. They will score, its enevitable. I'm hoping this is the game Alex starts making some strides/ chemistry with our wrs. No predictions. But this is a huge game against one of the best teams in the NFL. It will be a real test of our mettle.

To your point, Junkie, we need far more productivity from the wideout spots. Although the below article on PFF metrics is sobering, I am encouraged by the Richardson and Crowder TDs to help get us a big win over Green Bay last time we took the field. Here is the link: www.google.com/amp/s/redskinswire.usatoday.com/2018/10/06/redskins-wrs-rank-31st-pff-alarming-inability-create-after-catch/amp/I'm looking forward to seeing what are receivers do against there secondary. I don't put much stock into that summary since we have done so well on the ground in our wins. The teams struggles in the Colts game further skews those rankings...just too small a sample to draw any conclusions from.
That said, I suspect we will see an improvement from the WR's if Maurice Harris is in the starting lineup and Doctson is inactive. We do not have a balanced threat with Doctson in the lineup and as we have bantered around here, Doctson is not getting winning his battles on the routes. Harris does a better job on the wide balls and makes the tough catches.
Things will improve against the Saints I suspect.
