There is a greater risk of infection with compound fractures, because of all of the outside debris that could get into the wound once it broke through the skin. The soft tissue must be cleaned out during surgery, Colvin explained, and it sometimes requires going back in for another cleaning with an additional surgery.
Seems to me this was anticipated given that this was a "dirty wound" as it is called to begin with.
I am not hear that this is a hospital acquired infection, like Staph or MRSA here. Just a post-operative cleanups. So I question whether these post-op clean-ups have anything much to do with Smith's recovery time. It's part of the process.

One writes out of one thing only—one’s own experience. Everything depends on how relentlessly one forces from this experience the last drop, sweet or bitter, it can possibly give. This is the only real concern of the artist, to recreate out of the disorder of life that order which is art. - James Baldwin

Hearing from several different people over last few days that Alex Smith is having devastating complications from his broken leg surgery battling infection. Supposedly he's had multiple surgeries to try to combat infection. Chances of him playing again in real jeopardy. ~ Eric Bickel
Washington Redskins quarterback Alex Smith is dealing with an infection caused by complications from multiple surgeries on his broken leg, sources confirmed to ESPN.
Sources told ESPN's Dianna Russini that there is concern that Smith, 34, is dealing with a career-ending injury after breaking the tibia and fibula in his right leg during a Week 11 loss to the Houston Texans on Nov. 18.
I hope Alex plays again, but more than that, I hope he is able to make a full recovery from this injury, with as little affect on normal life as possible in the long run. Prayers go out to him. The Lord is good.

rskin72: The Lambs O just cannot get into sync. Limited rush attack, and Goff is not in any rhythm at all

rskin72: sooner or later the Lambs D will give...or they will make a big play. Either way the Lambs D right now has to win the game for the team

cooley47: No guarantee you ever get back to this game. Sorry but Goff can’t get it done. McVay should consider getting a veteran QB in offseason.

SkinsTim: A first round pick for a guy that was terrible last year and his team is ready to move on from? No chance. They'll be luck to get a 2nd or a 3rd. I'd give up a 2nd for him and call it a day.
