In case you didn't know, the team drafted a young, potential stud, at QB last week. While we do have Colt McCoy (still recovering from various surgeries) and Case Keenum (who just two years ago took at team to the NFC title game)…...the question will inevitable arise as to when our new signal caller will get his first NFL starting opportunity. Ah, forgot AS...but we all know the story and most likely outcome there.
Jay has already mentioned patience is a key here....due to the very limited experience of Haskins while at OSU. Keim wrote this:
"When will Dwayne Haskins be ready? The Redskins have long considered him to have big upside; he has arm talent, is smart and is willing to work. But they know it will take some time due to his inexperience, with only 14 starts in college. They want to see how he handles the transition to an NFL offense and throwing with a different level of anticipation to succeed. Because he's a true pocket passer, they want to make sure he's adept at those areas before taking over. The key will be having a fan base and ownership that remains patient and allows him to develop the right way. To help that, Case Keenum must produce enough early to win games. Haskins could pay off big time for Washington, but he shouldn't be rushed. "
While we would all probably agree with that...still the pressure will be on to play the new QB...especially if we start slow. I am not sure the team would cycle through Case and Colt first either before bringing in Dwayne, if the wheels fall off the apple cart early on.
I hope that between a D with some key additions, ground game, and maybe a QB in Case that will roll the dice a little more than AS did...We will both win on the field, and win by letting Haskins watch and learn before being thrown into the mix. Think what KC did with mahomes….what was done with Rodgers at GB, Young with the 49ers...Rivers with the Chargers….
Of course, those QB's sat behind other great QB's. Here no one is preparing a bust of either McCoy or Keenum for Canton just yet. And with an anxious owner and fanbase...and a HC whose job may be on the line this season...we will probably see Haskins sooner than later.
Maybe some of you feel he would be ready after TC....start the opening game. I mean you learn best under pressure...and he is supposed to be a smart young kid. He will pick up our offense quickly, our OC will add bits of the OSU offense that work well with Haskins.
So what do you think? Know this is waaaayyyyy early, but will be interesting to see what we think vice what actually ends up happening.
