After 62 years, Sonny Jurgensen Is Retiring From Professional Football"I've decided to hang up my headphones and my clipboard. It's been a great 55 years in Washington. I want to thank our Redskin fans for being so generous to me and our teams, we owe it all to you. I've had so many wonderful memories of thousands of teammates I've played with and talked about during my years in radio and television in Washington D.C." LINK

Nack - Sonny and I have the same Birthday (8/23) - and he was and is my all-time fave to wear the Burgundy and Gold. The end of an era. God Bless Sonny!

I'm too young to remember Sonny in his prime, but I do distinctly remember his heroic performance against the Dolphins in 1974. They were the best team in football then, coming off back to back Super Bowls, and Sonny singlehandedly won that game for us. Damn shame he couldn't play in the 1973 SB for us. And it was must see tv to see him with Glenn Brenner and George Michael.

Sonny, Sam and Frank were as good as game broadcasting got, especially back in the 80s and early 90s, IMO. I really miss them.
Of course, the football in Washington was pretty good then, too.

one of my biggest regrets was not making the effort to dub the radio audio on all the games I taped back in the 80's. I would drive down from Philly to watch the games at my mothers house even when the game was on up here - until the arrival of the Norv.
Watching the games while listening to Sonny, Frank & Sam was like being wrapped in a comfortable blanket on a cold day in front of a fire place.

My Mom graduated High School with Sonny Jurgensen . He was in her English class. He signed her Senior yearbook and I have that yearbook. My Dad also went to High School with him as well.

A true treasurer to all Redskin fans--As Carnack remarked --"The end of an era". It had to happen eventually, but a sad day nonetheless.

I didn't listen to the radio broadcast as much in recent years because the magic in that booth has been gone for a while, but I did enjoy hearing Sonny's voice when I did listen. Sam, Sonny, and Frank. You meant so much to so many fans, being such an enjoyable part of our Sundays in the fall for years. We were so fortunate. Thank you. And, of course, I'll never forget, as a kid, watching and admiring Sonny's performance as our quarterback. A great, great player -- one of the best of all time.

I agree, end of an era. Sonny didn't have as much to say the last couple years, but when he spoke it was prescient. I will miss that.
I will still sync the radio broadcast to games. LM is competent and tolerable, nothing more. Cooley is insightful and Doc is a wild man. Even though it is less than the glory days of Sonny, Sam and Frank, it beats the stuffing out of anything Fox puts up there.
I will truly miss you Christian Adolph "Sonny" Jurgensen

And it was must see tv to see him with Glenn Brenner and George Michael. I remember the comeback he led in '74 as well. Funny story about Sonny and that game. A couple of years ago I was at an autograph signing and Sonny was there. A buddy of mine wanted to meet him and get his autograph so I went with him. In line, the guy in front of us had an 8X10 of Sonny in that '74 game against the Fins. When he asked Sonny to sign it, he mistakenly said it was from the Super Bowl game in Jan '73. Sonny corrected him and let him know that it was from the game in '74. The guy got his autograph and went on his merry way. But I could tell Sonny wanted to talk more about that '74 game. So when my buddy and I took our turn up to the table I said, "So tell us more about the '74 game and the comeback." Sonny sat back in his chair, put a cigar in his mouth, and told the entire story of the winning drive. He said that the RB who caught the game-winning td pass, Larry Smith, had returned to the huddle earlier in that drive and told his QB that he thought he had broken his leg. Sonny told him, "Well you're not leaving this game. We need you!" Later that day I looked up highlights to that game on youtube and Sonny's recollection of that last drive was 100% accurate. And in reading a post-game write-up, Larry Smith did actually suffer a broken leg on that last drive.

Definitely remember Sonny's playing days....the battle with Billy Kilmer for starting QB. Still think with Sonny under center we could have beat the Fins in our first SB game.
He will be sorely missed. I have listened to the radio broadcast of games exclusively over the past decade plus...and always liked to hear Jurgy's takes. I have his Jersey....but have never had the privilege to meet/speak with him.
As Navy types always say for a retirement, I wish Sonny "Fair winds and Following seas".
